Mrs. Goldie Campbell, 94, of Woodbury died August 31, 2009 at her home. She was born July 8, 1915 in Cannon County. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 from 4-8 PM at the Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at 2 PM in the Smith Funeral Home chapel with Wade Campbell officiating. Interment will follow at Center Hill Cemetery.

Jimmy Tyrone Blair, 63, of Woodbury, died Friday, August 14, 2009. He was the son of the late Floyd and Sylvia Hibdon Blair. Memorial services were held Friday, August 29 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Dennis Clark officiating. Burial was in Gunter-Grizzle Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services for Johnny Waymon Thomas, 67, of Lena, Mississippi were held Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Center Hill Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Thomas, a native of Cannon County, died Wednesday, August 26.

Funeral services for Leoma Vassar, 82, of Woodbury were held Friday, August 28, 2009 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Herb Alsup officiating. Burial was in Thyatira Cemetery with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Flora Blair Markum, 82, of Morrison died Thursday, August 20, 2009. A native of Cannon County, she was a member of the Lumley Stand Church of Christ and daughter of the late John Carlton Blair, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Kirby Smith Blair.

Pauline Davidson Hardin, 94, of Peaceful Hill Farm in Auburntown, TN, went home to be with her God on August 30, 2009, while in Jacksonville, FL. Born June 5, 1915, in Bakerville, Humphreys County, Tennessee.

Sterling Parton, age 92, of Murfreesboro went to be with the Lord Friday, August 28, 2009. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, August 31, at Woodfin Funeral Home. Brian Harrell officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Cannon County traveled to class 5A West Creek High School in Clarksville last Friday. Following a week of practice to correct their mistakes from the first game of the season, the Lions were looking forward to their match-up against the Coyotes. It was evident from the opening kickoff that the Lions were ready to play.
Coach Joel Schrenk praised his players for playing hard. “We’ll always play hard. The boys never give up. I challenged the offense to run the ball in the second half and they answered with a time-consuming drive. They got it done and this was a good win for us.”

Two-a-days practice sessions have come and gone and are little more than a distant memory for literally thousands of high school football players. Those hot August scrimmages that many of us witnessed only a few short weeks ago are no longer the critical issues they once were. Some fans would actually have to pause and scan their memory banks if asked to name the teams their favorite squads scrimmaged against last month.

Cannon Countians from all walks of life peppered U.S. Senator Bob Corker with tough questions and strong opinions about the issue of health care reform and other subjects during the senator's visit for a town hall-style meeting last Tuesday at the Cannon County Senior Center. A large turnout filled the room and overflowed the parking lot.

The father, dressed in the plain clothes of a prairie farmer, stood looking up at the open door of the hayloft, where his young daughter sat with her legs dangling over the side.
The young, pig-tailed girl, who wore a simple calico dress, was holding a small Bible. She was troubled and had sought comfort within its worn pages.

If you have not flown on one of the major airlines lately, then you have missed out on what "getting on someone's last nerve" really means. With the all the security precautions in place, patience has become even more than a virtue. It has become a necessity.
Long lines, knowing what you can and cannot bring on board, luggage checks and even flight delays can really try one's patience in today's airports. But, give me security any day over a bit of inconvenience if it means keeping our skies safe in this country.
