Battle may be brewing over schools' budget

A showdown may be looming over the budget for Cannon County Schools for the current fiscal year, which began July 1.

During a special called meeting on Tuesday (July 31), the Cannon County Board of Education decided to continue pressing for 75 cents of the property tax rate.

The Cannon County Budget Committee has forwarded a budget to the Cannon County Board of Commissioners with a tax rate for schools of 68.5 cents.

Schools are seeking more money to help fund, among other things, a vice principal to be shared by two of the system's elementary schools, as well as more guidance counselors.

The budget committee's proposed budget has been sent to the state's Division of Local Government Audit for its approval.

The county commission is scheduled to consider and vote on the proposed budget at its regular monthly meeting on Aug. 16. The final budget must be submitted to the state by Aug. 31.
