I want to take this opportunity to thank all the great people of Woodbury and Cannon County for making the past 14 years a joy and privilege to serve you as Owner-Editor-Publisher of our county’s newspaper, the Cannon Courier. I cannot begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed my association with you, the subscriber, the advertiser, business owner and the citizen who had a dog, boat or car to sell, a yard sale to advertise or a house to rent. Each ad was just as important, no matter the size. You were a customer and I thank you for your support.

MURFREESBORO - Five former Middle Tennessee standouts will make up the 2009 Hall of Fame class when they are inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame, Oct. 17.
Granville "Buck" Bouldin (tennis), Sheikh Faye (track), Charles "Fuzzy" Harmening (men's basketball), Steve McAdoo (football) and Danny Moore (baseball) will be enshrined during Hall of Fame induction ceremonies prior to Middle Tennessee's football game against Mississippi State.

In Genesis 1, verse 1 of the Bible, it is recorded that God made heaven and earth. From there He went on to make everything we enjoy and have on this planet, which we never should forget. He also states in this chapter of Genesis that what He saw that He created was very good. In verse ten, the forming of dry land and water is mentioned, and since that very beginning it has been under His control. But, if the U.S. Senate has its way with the Clean Water Restoration Act currently being considered up in D.C., all waters falling on the USA from the heavens above may soon be under the control of the U.S. government.

Nelson T. Denny of Woodbury passed away Fri., July 31, 2009 at the age of 80. A native of Putnam Co., his parents were the late Tony Lee & Lena Gentry Denny. Graveside services will be 2:30 pm Sunday, Aug. 2 at Thyatira Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 10 a.m until 2 p.m.

MURFREESBORO - Former Hee-Haw actress known as Ida Lee Nagger, Roni Stoneman, will be picking her banjo for Barn Party attendees at the August 15th event at Womack Stables.
Roni Stoneman is the youngest daughter of Ernest V. "Pop" Stoneman, patriarch of the Stoneman Family, one of the most famous family groups in early country music.
Last night's show at the 45th annual International Festival of the Pyrenees featured the Cripple Creek Cloggers as opening act. With several thousand in the audience, the Rutherford County, TN troupe, accompanied by the Rigney Family Bluegrass of Normandy, TN, gave a rousing performance that had all those present clapping vigorously.
Charles E. Daniels, 55, of Murfreesboro died July 27, 2009. He was born January 6 1954 in Nashville, TN. His parents were the late Charles and Minnie Alice (Ford) Daniels.
MOULTRIE, GA - Carolyn Youngblood Zboyan, 66, of Moultrie, Ga. and formerly of Woodbury, died Thursday, July 30, 2008, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Cobb Funeral Chapel in Moultrie, Ga. with Rev. Julian Griner officiating. Private interment will be in Center Hill Cemetery, Woodbury, Tennessee.
West Side VFD firefighters and their families will be hosting a fund raising booth at Red Apple Days in Auburntown Friday and Saturday. The firefighters are challenging members of the community to release their inner firefighter by participating in an obstacle course. Prizes will be awarded to the best posted time in each category.
Mrs. Naomi Hutchinson Bailiff, 75, of Woodbury died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Middle TN Medical Center following an extended illness. Services will be held Saturday, August 1 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Gardens with Woodbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
WILLIE MAE NIPPER age 81 of Murfreesboro, died Thursday July 30, 2009. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Vera Miller Burnett.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, with Glenn Climer officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.
In my youth, the thought never came to me that someday I would very much miss certain things in Cannon County. Now I am a Senior Citizen and my mind takes trips down memory lane quite often.
The Tennessee Team Pride Flight 15u AAU Girls Basketball team just finished up a very successful season. The team consists of girls from the Middle Tennessee area and locally Emily Sissom, daughter of Gaylon and Suzette Sissom. They are coached by Bryan Hayes formerly of Woodbury and son of Buddy and Virginia Hayes.
Thousands of sheep are in their mountain pastures overlooking this town of 12,000, site of two previous winter Olympics, where the Cripple Creek Cloggers and Rigney Family Bluegrass arrived Monday for the concluding week of the International Festival of the Pyrenees.
The Cannon County All Stars took 2nd place in state competition in Tennessee Youth Baseball Association (T.Y.B.A.) tournament.

East Side Elementary School Principal Karen King addresses students, parents and teachers Tuesday night during the school's Back-to-School Bash. In addition to enjoying a BBQ dinner and free school supplies, attendees also learned of the many improvements that have occurred at the school during the summer vacation in preparation for the upcoming year.
NORTHBROOK, Ill., July 22 -- Middle Tennessee senior running back Phillip Tanner, a standout in the classroom and on the field, has been named to an elite group of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team (R) as announced by the American Football Coaches Association and Allstate Insurance Company today.
The Cannon Courier newspaper has new ownership, effective today.
Andy Bryson, a mainstay at the Courier since 1959 and the owner for the last 15 years, announced that he has sold the newspaper to McMinnville businessman Ron Fryar, a veteran of the Tennessee newspaper business.

Multiple charges were filed against a man accused of possessing a variety of illegal drugs during a traffic stop Monday night on Old Woodbury Highway, a Rutherford County sheriff’s sergeant reported.
