The Cannon County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to continue to press for 75 cents of the county's property tax rate to help fund its budget for the current fiscal year (FY2018-2019).

Tuesday's special meeting of the board was called because the Cannon County Board of Commissioners passed a budget and certified tax rate which gave the schools an appropriation of .685 cents.

According to school board chairman Bruce Daniel, the two bodies are about $159,000 apart in agreeing to an amount of funding for schools this year.

Fifth District school board member Shelly Walkup made the motion to keep the schools' funding request at 75 cents. It was seconded by Daniel. Those two along with board members Nathan Sanders and Tim Powers all voted in favor of the motion.

"I was under the impression teachers and principals wanted us stay with the (75 cents) amount," Walkup said in making the motion.

The county commission has a special session called for Friday (Aug. 31) at 5 p.m., with one of the items on the agenda being consideration of the schools' budget.

If the county commission were to change its budget and increase the certified tax rate to give schools more money this year, it would have to call a public hearing.

Director of Schools William Curtis said at Tuesday's meeting he has consulted with state official and legal experts who have told him schools could continue operating under the FY2018 budget until Oct. 1. At that point if the schools' budget is not approved, Basic Education Program funding would be cut off by the state.

A new county commission and new school board both take office on Saturday. The county commission will have six new members and the school board two.
