Schools face hefty trash bill increase

The decision by new County Executive Brent Bush to close the transfer station at the Cannon County Convenience Center will likely mean the county school system will pay $10,000 a year or more than it is now for trash pickup service.

Currently trash pickup is done at the county's seven schools by two service providers.

One of those is the Town of Woodbury, which provides trash pickup service at Cannon County High School and Woodbury Grammar School.

Prior to the closing of the transfer station at the beginning of this month, the town's garbage trucks were taking trash picked up at those two schools to the transfer station at the convenience center.

The town has been charging the school system around $200 per month per school for that service. Once the trash has been taken to the transfer station, the county has been paying the cost of hauling it to Middle Point Landfill in Murfreesboro and depositing it there.

The town is now having to haul the trash to the landfill and pay the tipping fee after the Cannon County Board of Commissioners voted last week not to reimburse Woodbury for those costs, even though the county collects property taxes to pay for the services.

It costs the county school system about $900 more per month to provide trash pickup service to the two schools closest in enrollment to the high school and Woodbury Grammar. Both Woodland Elementary and West Side Elementary paid $658.16 each in August for pick-up service.

Republic Services -- which operates Middle Point Landfill -- picks up the garbage at Woodland and West Side. That company also services Auburntown, Short Mountain and East Side schools. Republic charged those three schools $164.54 apiece last month.

The Town of Woodbury is in the process of studying its options following the closure of the transfer station, one of which may include ending dumpster pickup service.

If that's the case, and the transfer station is not reopened, the schools will be forced to contract with Republic or another company to serve the high school and Woodbury Grammar.
