Some of his former students were on hand to congratulate William (Freddy) Curtis on being named Cannon County Director of Schools on Thursday.

The vote was not unanimous, but, as expected, William (Freddy) Curtis was selected as the Director of Schools for Cannon County on Thursday.

At a special called meeting at Woodbury Grammar School, the Cannon County Board of Education voted 4-1 to name Curtis, who has served as interim director since Dec. 1, to the position.

Curtis signed a three-year contract which included a stipulation that he move to Cannon County by June 1 of this year. A 32-year employee of the school system, Curtis has recently been living in DeKalb County.

Board chairman Bruce Daniel, along with members Shelly Walkup, Javin Fann and Tim Powers, voted for Curtis after his named was put forth for consideration by Walkup and seconded by Fann.

Board member Nathan Sanders voted against naming Curtis to the post. Sanders had previously nominated Karen King, the current principal at West Side School, for the position. Sanders was the only one of the five board members to vote for King.

"I would like to thank the board," Curtis said. "It has been my pleasure to work for the board since Dec. 1. We have some great personnel in Cannon County (schools) and I am honored to be their leader and we will work together to build the best possible school system that we can have."

Curtis replaces Barbara Parker as permanent director of schools. He was a teacher as Cannon County High School before being named interim director.
