The Cannon County Lions are in a position just like their rival DeKalb County Tigers was a week ago, trying to break a three-game losing streak. The Lions started out hot beating up on two opponents that are now a collective 1-9 altogether with the only win in a contest between the both of them. Since then they have lost three straight.

They were in the game until the fourth quarter against Sequatchie County in Week 3. A fumble in the end zone in Week 4 along with two extra missed points were the keys in a one-point loss at Moore County. Last Friday, simply not applying the basic fundamentals when it came to tackling allowed a run away game against Upperman.

Although their record doesn't show it, DeKalb is 2-3 and a really good team. Their three losses have come against opponents who are still undefeated going into Week 6. They started out by beating Warren County 19-14. Since then Warren has only gained one win. The next three games were blowouts by Upperman 43-0, Stone Memorial 35-0 and Watertown 48-14. Two of those games were in Smithville. Last Friday DeKalb got their passing game going and were able to grab their second win of the season beating Grundy County in a non-region, game 28-6.

The rivalry has been dominated on the football field by DeKalb County over the past decade. It's been 11 seasons since the Lions last won, as back in 2007 they recorded a 26-23 victory. Since then it's been a ugly one-sided affair. DeKalb outscored the Lions a collective 469-62 when the two teams have met. Five out of the last six years have resulted in mercy rule shutouts.

This season could very well be different however. Both teams are trying to get back on track and finish strong with playoff hopes in their respective regions and even though it may have been one-sided in the past, the Lions want to show the community and their rivals that the football culture has indeed changed.

No matter what the records are, no matter what the results have been in the past, when these two rivals have met up, it's all about the now when you mention DeKalb and Cannon. They both have had this Friday marked on their calendar because of the extra spice that this year's contest will bring. Cannon's star running back Tyler Bundy is a transfer from DeKalb County and the Tigers are looking forward to the reunion. Word is so is he.

Kickoff is at 7:00 but like every time these two teams meet it will be standing room only better there get there early.
